Introduction

Course Overview & Legislative Context Current legislation requires operators to remain trained and competent when operating forklifts in the workplace. This course provides participants with the necessary ongoing training, knowledge, and practical assessment to ensure safe and compliant forklift operation in alignment with the following WHS legislative requirements & Australian standards: WHS Act 2011 • s 19(3)(f): Duty of a PCBU to provide necessary information, training, instruction, and supervision. • s 28: Duty of workers to comply with health and safety instructions and workplace procedures. WHS Regulations 2011 • Reg 39: Mandates suitable and adequate training based on task nature and operational risk. • Regs 81–85: High Risk Work (HRW) Licensing obligations for LF/LO classes. • Reg 201: Duty to ensure plant operators are competent and authorised for specific equipment. AS 2359.2 (Powered Industrial Trucks — Operation, Maintenance & Repair) • Section 2: Mandates ongoing operator evaluation, site-specific retraining, and competency verification.

Course content

Course Content 1. Workplace Legislation & Compliance o Overview of WHS Acts and Regulations (Duty of Care duties for PCBUs and workers). 2. Planning & Preparation o Identifying workplace hazards and implementing standard risk controls. o Selecting appropriate forklifts based on load ratings and environmental conditions. o Inspecting operating areas and planning load movement paths. o Establishing clear workplace communication protocols. 3. Routine Pre-Operational & Operational Checks o Conducting visual inspections for damage, wear, and legible safety signage. o Executing pre-start, post-start, and operational checks in accordance with procedures. o Testing controls, safety devices, and functions to operational limits. o Reporting and logging defects or damage for appropriate corrective action. 4. Load Handling & Manoeuvring o Verifying load weights against capacity data plates. o Operating at safe speeds and applying site hazard control measures. o Moving, carrying, and stacking loads safely to maintain structural stability. o Continuously monitoring load movement and responding to unexpected hazards. 5. Shutdown & Equipment Security o Parking forklifts safely clear of accessways and hazards. o Following correct shutdown procedures and post-operational checks. o Securing equipment against unauthorised use. o Reporting and logging any post-operation defects.
